im glad im not the only one that thought that was extremely overpriced

I'm sure emissions states gouge the fuck out of you because they know you need it. I don't live in a state with any sort of inspection or testing. If you get your cat replaced it's because you want the CEL to go off and don't have any mechanical skills.

i dont have testing either i just decided i liked how quiet my car was and wanted to keep it pretty much original. its not going to give me any performance advantage to have it off or anything that motor is anemic anyway lol

Exhaust work sucks but it's satisfying to do yourself imo. Replaced the cat with a straight through on my 20 year old car and took maybe 2 hours tops with careful (lol) sawzall and hammer work.

you really don't need to be mechanically inclined to replace stock exhaust components yourself

Exhaust work is super easy unless you're a shitty welder and blow threw the material

Very little rust here also

So I finally got it down to know that the p0420 code is being set off by the catalytic converter. (went to a shop that had a special code reader and they said o2 sensors were fine etc etc)

However, the guy at the shop told me that the car I have is a "california" model? He said that California has a different part/build for the catalytic converter or something along those lines. And that every other state except california has the same build.

He said that since the part is the California model or w.e the part itself is $460 with $80 of labor. The labor is fine to me. I literally just got home so i haven't had time to research the part/california thing but I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight on what exactly happened to make California want to be different and if $460 sounds right for the cat.

He said that if it weren't the California part it would only be $180 for everything including installation.

Thanks again guys

That's because every other states catalytic converters are known to cause cancer in California.

It is probably made into the exhaust manifold. You can open your hood and figure that out. There are 2 different styles shown for your car. 1 is C.A.R.B certified which is what he is talking about.
