I think you've mentioned this before; drier tracks (for dirt tracks) provide poorer grip? Is that why hot tracks are less favorable?

Pretty much. Imagine a ball of dry clay in your hands. Think of it's properties. If it is packed hard it will have a dusty layer on the outside. That dust is loose and slick. Now imagine wetting it enough that it sticks to your hands. As you roll it around it sticks like glue.

For the most part, they are slick unless they start to take rubber, I prefer tacky hooked up tracks
