Borla muffler and drive it. A CAI will never pay for itself.

Flows sound like popcorn at wide open throttle on ls engines.

Borla makes a great sounding muffler, although my exhaust never popcorns

A CAI is not worth it?

I work at a Chevy dealership and I've heard a ton of different exhaust on them. I run flow master 40s on my 6 liter. A lot if people run the k&n and I've heard good things about the bully dog gas programmers (expensive but tons of tunes and lots of maps to monitor your truck). At the end if the day, it's your truck. You're the only one that has to like it. The 5.3 is so vast and can be tuned so easily so you'll have lots if choices.

Nice, thanks for the advice. I know it's my truck to customize to my liking but I'm just looking to get some advice from guys who are more experienced on these mods (i've rarely done any work on previous vehicles being in college and all). I like to do the research before I dump money into it, get a variety of opinions.

Not looking to go crazy, but I have the money to put a few things into it to improve it's sound and performance. I'll probably just go with the muffler, and skip the full exhaust system to save myself a shit ton of money. Unless someone can tell me it's worth just going for an exhaust system and the benefits of doing it?

I'm seeing a lot of good things being said about Westers Tune? Anyone have any experience on them?

CAI's aren't worth shit. Whether it be for horsepower or alleged mpg gains, you will see none of those. About the only thing CAI's are good for is slightly more noise.

Now if you were super/turbo charged then a CAI might help suck in some more air, but since you aren't planning on doing that I would save the money

Personally...I at least buy the k&n air filter. Some oem filters are ridiculous.

Running a k&n will get you some slight gains at best but noise is the most notice able. Running a tune or tuner will help bring out your gains.

Oiled cotton gauze filters like k&n are a bad idea. Dry synthetic filters offer similar air flow with better filtration and no oil to get on the MAF. Cleaning is as easy as blowing them off with compressed air.

Cai viability all depends on whether the oem air box is a restriction. Case in point my 500hp Ls1 and 550hp ls1 both used purolator paper filters. The filter wasn't a restriction in that system.

My flowmaster bashing comes from the obnoxious tone they make at WOT compared to a more refined sound from others. They tend to drone worse when cruising too. Truck guys run them more but i think a lot of that is marketing and lack of exposure to alternatives. It will satisfy your need for loud if that is all you care about. If you leave the cats on it will help.

Then why recommend a k&n filter? Their filtration is terrible.

I said nothing about getting an oiled filter.
