Charleston is the #1 romantic destination in the country if you are taking the girlfriend.
It's a great mix of historic southern charm and fine dining. It has a unique feel and everyone is happy. Great nightlife... The College of Charleston is downtown. You can watch the students at the citadel practice drills, tour a decommissioned sub and aircraft carrier, try the best seafood in the states, and hit the outlet mall if that's your thing. There are lots of guided tours and horse drawn carriage tours.
There are 3 main tourist beaches all with their own feel. When i go i stay west of ashley. 5 minutes to downtown for 1/3rd the price. It puts you in the center of a triangle between the outlets, folly beach, and downtown. A nice bed and breakfast downtown can be $600-$1200 a night haha. Try the pad thai at Thai Basil then walk to the rooftop bar and enjoy a cigar 6 floors up on top of the Vendue Inn. The northeast side overlooks the bridge to Mt Pleasant which is well lit and the largest of its kind in the world. It's my favorite spot in town. You can come here (I'm at my uncle's restaurant on east bay street right now) 20x and not see/do everything. It's not a giant commercial development like myrtle. You could try hilton head too if you mainly want the beach thing.
If you want some real SC native feel rent a house at edisto beach. It's a tiny island with 2 restaurants and a grocery store. Nothing else. We take the whole family once a year for a week away from civilization. It's the exact opposite of myrtle. You have to like peace and quiet to enjoy it. Only recently have people from out of state started going there. $900-1800 a week for spring or fall depending on the house.
