I have to say this. fuck helis
I don't know why they are so hard to fly. But I just can't.
I have like 60 hours of practice on an rc flight sim. nope doesnt help.

This guy must have some kind of super power because what the fuck.

As a rc guy I never could get into planes or helicopters, something about making a mistake and everything going in the trash was something I couldn't deal with

They are cool tho

Finished the wing construction completely. Next step is polyspan sheeting with adhesive, hot iron, and a hot air gun.

I got a spinner for the prop; Though I had to use a washer to make it fit. Will have to troubleshoot that because using a flat washer might let the prop slip under high torque.

Why not just put the motor forward a bit more with some washers behind the mounting screws?

Good luck with the covering...I was never good at that shit. Monokote or Ultracote? I forgot so much of this stuff lol.

well i cant move the motor mount without building a new fuselage. but that is not the problem.

here is the disassembled prop/spinner

The problem is that the aluminum backplate of the spinner does not fully seat against the collet chuck.

I drilled out a washer of the right thickness to fill the gap. the problem is that this will create a smooth surface and cause slipping.
It also appears that the surface tolerance on washers is very very low which means the prop may be off balance. even .5deg off center will cause major problems at 9,000 rpm

One possible solution is to pay a machinist to drill a 3/8" through-hole in the aluminum backplate. I can't do this myself because it requires zero-tolerance alignment.

edit;
I'll be covering the plane with a material called Polyspan which is a porous polyester fiber cloth that shrinks a little bit under heat. Combined with Aerogloss clear (butyrate dope) paint.

Yeah, just drill out the backplate of the spinner, or you may be able to find a thick tooth washer?

I went ahead and drilled it out at home with the family drill press. I let it self center on the bit and then clamped it in place.
Everything seems to be balanced at full throttle.

here's some info about the motor setup.

Because this motor is rated for no more than 30amps of current I will have to adjust the trim of the throttle so that 100% only draws 30amps instead of 32.4.
I will make sure I can only reach 92% of full. This will bring down the rpm to about 7,750 and the static thrust to 45oz.
So the power to weight ratio is going to be about 1.4:1 which should be enough to pull out of maintained vertical flight

I just went outside and turned on the motor. I used a small digital tachometer to check the rpm.
It gets to 9,200rpm which is way above previous estimates. very happy about that :)

I've always wanted to get into rc planes, but I think I would get bored of it or be too scared to break it. O used to have an axial sxc10 Rubicon, but just sold it last week, those are fun
