If it wasn't SMG transmission I would say go for it.

Speaking from own experience

The SMG is not bad to drive but it is known to go out. The part is over $1000+ and labor is probably at least 7hours. Cost wise is pretty close if you want to convert to manual after SMG dies, something to consider if you find a SMG car at a good price. I regret buying a SMG however as it is just not as smooth as regular automatic or a babied manual. Ymmv

Another big issue with this car is the VANOS system. I already replaced the Vanos solenoid coil pack myself (with a rebuilt $150). There is also a chain guide that broke I will have to replace. All vanos associated parts eventually die so I ended up just doing a full overhaul to not worry about it again. $1000+ parts

One of the HID ballasts went out on my car. $100 for a used on ***. The ignitor is also known to go out and costs the same but requires you to take apart the headlights. Ballast took less than 30min for me to change.

You'll also hear about subframe issues with this car. Very expensive if it has not been addressed. But I don't believe I have this issue on mine. And BMW recall program may still be willing to work.with you if something happens.

All in all, any car will have its share of problems. And the M3 is a performance car. Once you fix the common faults of the car, you have to worry about maintenance costs. I'm not sure how car saavy you are, but it's easy to get ripped off if you don't know.how to break down cost for labor and parts. I don't regret buying a M3. I just regret the price I paid for it. Even at 63000 miles, I wouldn't pay more than 15K for the car you listed. This means you cant be looking at dealership cars. Id advise you go apply for financing at your local bank or credit union if you can qualify. And then take the check to buy a much better priced M3 from private party. Then tske the money saved to do a full overhaul on the car so you can drive it like how it was meant to.

With my personal experience the car is pretty damn solid. The VANOS is something to indeed worry about. The I6 3.2L motor puts out sexy power and gets decent MPGs. The sound system is great (I had the Harmon/Kardon).

I would recommend finding a 6speed since SMG is shit. Also prepare to pay $90-$100 for an oil change (if you do it yourself), or $200 if you choose to take it to the dealer. The oil is what costs so much..I could only get it from online or go into my local BMW dealership and buy from them which I felt was better for me.

My water pump went out within a month of buying it (I bought it @62kmiles) and it cost me $700 to have an indy shop fix it. Looking back I could have and should have just did it myself. I loved the car but I was out of my league at that time...

Overall it is a nice ride and very enjoyable.
