It would be hard to list 3 but my top 5 have already been mentioned.

if by DD engine you mean the maintenance schedule is followed correctly I would venture to say a 12 valve p-pump cummins would outlast nearly everything.

A gen 1 SBC, 3800 series II, 300 I6, and 4.0 jeep I6 are all tied for my "don't do anything but add oil when necessary and still crack 300k mi" award.

Any cummins will last forever with proper maintenance. The 1st gen (intercooled) 2nd gen 12v's and the 6.7's are some of the toughest motors i've dealt with. Thats if left with stock fueling and deletes done.

I was leaving the common rail trucks off the list because of the higher possibility of catastrophic engine failure due to the injection system. It's better in all aspects except for the danger factor. Even if you maintain it properly you can have an injector hang open and boom.

Easily 3800 series 2 . This engine is a freaking tank.
Then I would probably say an old Chevy 350
Not sure about the last one

First one that came to my mind was the Series 2 3.8 as well.

i agree completely. the 12v is obviously just an awesome setup. its retard proof (minus the smoke and power screws) however the 6.7L fueling setup is miles ahead of the 5.9's
