You're basically building a cage with wheels. If there's any weight issue, it'll be that it's too light.

For example, aluminum won't work at all. on top of the flex issues, you'd pop a wheelie on ice if you got on it.

A buggy chassis would weigh fuck all compared to a VW whatever the hell that motor is out of.
Steel = cheap, strong and easy to work with.
You can get a decent mig welder a auto darkening visor and a mechanical pipe bender for 5 bills.
Mind you I would want a hydraulic bender, unless your lou ferigno's nephew it's a pita.

pipe bender and tube bender are different, be very aware of that

pipe bender will kink shit and it WILL NOT be safe
