I don't agree with the generalization about the reliability of german cars. I do agree that you should get a Japanese ecobox. I have a few friends who have loved their Accords. Civics and Corollas aren't bad either.

mazda / honda / toyota

cant go wrong with a good running car if its been kept up with.

accords are a really nice daily.
mazda 3 another.
and if you dont care if its practical or not a miata is a really fun car, i currently drive one.

Avoid Mazdas like the plague, the rust issues are way too prominent. Stick with Honda and Toyota.

it really depends on where the car is from and where you continue to drive it.
my 94 doesnt have a spot of rust, im in Florida.

my 99 protege came from st louis and ive had it for about 5 years now. there is a very minimal amount of rust bubbling on it. the engine will go before the body goes on it.
