If I bring my mechanic (close friend), and he says it checks out, what are you thinking it's worth with the salvage?

EDIT: I mean, here's my situation. I appreciate the advice greatly, but I'm very limited. I'm really only searching for Toyotas (Camry, Corolla, Solara), Hondas (Accord), and Buicks (Regal, Park Avenue). I need something with 100k or less miles so it will last me a while, and then my budget is $6k tops.

you can find a civic for under 6k dont buy salvage unless you're going to make it a derby car or somthing

For 6k budget and your stuck buying a 02 salvaged car?
Seems odd to me... For 6k i could get somethig as new as 06-07 easy in good shape

I cant see location being that much of a difference flr an econobox town car
Keep looking

Hell i got an 05 with one hell of a sound system and exhaust work + a few others done for 4400$
My buddy just got an 08 acent for 5k, only 65k kms on it. Its plain jane, but still

Haven't called yet because this is almost a 3 hour drive.

For the record though, what does the year matter if it has lower miles than a newer car and still has all the features? If anything I think it'd be easier to work on if it were a little older.

Low miles or not its still an older car. The Corolla is a much better bet though.

That corolla is nice
Looks clean, decent miles. But still price seems high

Go to hit place to check it out, if it looks alright and it is safetied. just wave $5000 cash in front of his face, he will take it ( or less if you find more small problems)

Same friend I hauled the Solara off for has a slightly newer Corolla S, and her mom has an 03 Corolla. Both have been excellent cars for many miles.

Checked out the Solara today. It was obvious from the start that this was no light wreck. The core support had been bent and welded back into place poorly. Needed a serious alignment as well.

Called the Corolla guy, also has a salvage title. Will not be going to look at it.

Out of options again.

Edit:
We're gonna call this guy: http://topeka.craigslist.org/cto/3962407617.html

I won't be paying $6k for it, but if it turns out to be nice, what's a fair offer?

Offer 45, try to drag him down on it as far as he'll go.

If you pay 5 you're not having a terrible day imo. 106k is a little high, but it's clean.
Check under the oil cap.

I'll definitely check all bases when I go to look. The only thing that concerns me is that the transmission was rebuilt. It could be good or bad depending on who did it.
