on any motorcycle, except flat track, the front brake does the majority of the stopping.

in most cases its fine to just use the rear.

emergency though you want as much stopping power as you can get. since weight shifts forward in a hard stop the front brake is going to be more effective than the rear.

The only place to really avoid the front brake is deep sugar sand. On a road bike the front does 80 or 90% of the work stopping from speed. Look at how much narrower the front tire is but the brakes are 3 or 4 times the size. Its all about smooth weight transition. If you grab a handful of front brake and squeeze the life out of it you are fucked.

OP that is a pretty good price on that bike if its in good shape.

nice. Its probably easier doing it on small/enduro bikes than on street bikes.

I just got my license a few weeks ago! I love it!

I grabbed a cheap old Honda off the shelf from some friends of mine at a dealership to ride while I fix up my other bike.

I try to stay centered when braking, I lock up the rear fist then give 50% or so on front and do a controlled stop with the quickness. I have locked both before and stayed up, but it is crucial to get the back one grabbing before you hit the front in a full on stop or you could endo way too easily.
