Didn't read everything here but if its not already stated, *most* states will only make you pay sales tax on the ammount of cash you pay over the traded value. For example:
You trade your car (20,000 value) for his car (26,000 price) and you add the 6,000 to cover the difference, you will pay state sales tax on the 6,000 dollars instead of the 26,000 dollars because you've already payed the sales tax on the 20,000 previously.
That's how it's always worked for me. Check with the state DMV to be sure though.
