It's not a waste, the bike will do everything he'd want from a motorcycle. Especially with him NEVER riding before, I'd be inclined to say throwing him on a 600 supersport and wishing him the best of luck would be retarded.
The 300 Ninja is peppy for its size, has controllable power, ABS (which is amazing on a bike) and they have a half-decent resell value because they are a BEGINNER bike. Oh, and you get a warranty.

Motorcycles get ridden hard, why buy someone elses ridden trash?

Not to mention, he's going to drop the bike, at least a 300 will be easier to pick up. So I guess if you need to go over 115 MPH (which is the Ninja 300's top speed), you should look at a bigger bike.

Get some sort of inline 4 600 CC Bike.

Anything smaller would be learnable but the throttle will not be there when you want to have fun!

I bought a 600cc as my first bike with NEVER riding a street/dirt bike before. I was fine. It only goes as much as you open the throttle. Dont ride it like a fucking idiot thinking your cool and wanna try and go fast and youll be fine

Relatively cheap. Tank and fenders are all that get painted (3 pieces), unless you are looking to do the entire bike (accents, frame, etc), which can get pricey.
It's a nice bike, and it's good that it's from FL. The only issue I'd recommend looking into would be rain riding. Can cause hell on some bikes. be sure to look for rust on lines (if they are braided), etc.

A motorcycle is a motorcycle. People ride them like idiots, regardless of the bike type and riding experience. People like the freedom.

Im working on and old 86 yamaha maxium type x it is 700 cc. But i have riding experience.
I would suggest something ~600 cc and lower hp no need to get an R1 or something wild unless u got some good life insurance.
