pinion is the piece at the end of your steering stem. the pinion teeth mesh and go along the rack teeth as you turn the steering wheel left and right. im guessing his entire rack and pinion is just wore out or something and needs replaced.

it does the same thing as pitman arm, drag link setup just in a different way. mainly semis and maybe full blown race cars (not sure on this one though) use a pitman arm setup
