So im thinking of buying a b6 (2002-2005) Audi a4 1.8t quattro. Most of the ones in my price range have between 70 and 110 thousand miles on them which is right around the time the timing belt and water pump need to be replaced. Now i know thats the main repair bill that i should watch out for on audis. So my question is how much on average does that repair cost (including labor). Some people have told me $1000 and others have told me $4000 (lol?) so i wanna know if i should get a cheaper one and get it fixed myself or if i should make sure to find one that has recently had the timing belt and pump already replaced.

i work at an audi dealership and we charge $140/hr for labor and sometimes the time gets dragged out for more money. parts are ofcourse expensive because they are german as well. i f i were you, i wouldn't buy an audi. 100k miles is all you can expect to get out of an a4 and the failure rate of the engines is 160/100. yes you read that right, 160 out of 100...

Has nothing to do with the engine more likely the peeps who driving it...and ur from the states?

U can find 1.8t in ALOT of cars...all V.A.G cars....Its a good engine if you take care of it and change oil.

its 8 year or 12k miles (swe miles)

I'd say you should check how often the oil has been changed....these engines have some big prob with oil sludge since Audi recommend "long life oil and services "  people tend to drive 3k miles before they change the oil which aint good and causes oil sludge.
Hope i helped you abit

Got a b6 myself so i got some info

why is 3k not good? conventional oil your talking bout?

if I was u id look into financing a 2.0t if you've got enough to buy a 1.8t outright you've got more then enough to make a downpayment and drive out with a low mileage car that will also be quicker.

I don't care about speed, all I care about is appearance/luxury. And audi b6's are my favorite car by a mile. I have $10,000 to buy a new car and was planning on spending $7500 on the audi and saving $2500 for random repairs. How long would that extra money keep the car running and in good condition?

by the sounds of it you wont be beating on it. look for one that was owned by an adult and you should be golden. if u get one from a kid they mostlikely mobbed around in that shit.
but really if u don't beat on it and keep up on all required maintenance theres no reason u shouldn't see plenty more miles out of a motor. I wouldn't look for ones with over 100k though id look for ones with 80k or as low as possible. and finding one that already had the belt/pump done would be ideal.
I had the chance to pick one up with like 80k on it for like 5k was owned by an older lady with all records of maintenance i wish i had scooped it.

E: if you learn to solve any of the smaller issues yourself 2500$ would go far.
