Depends how you ride and your luck. I bought my first street bike when i was 18( no prior expierence before that, dirtbikes etc). Im 22 now, and in 4 years of riding and about 40k miles ive only laid the bike down once. And that was 100% my fault. Took a trip up to the mountains with friends, i was still new to riding but wanted to go to the "twisties".Was an uphill road and at the peak was a sharp turn, i didnt know the roads and didnt really see the turn until the last minute, carried too much speed and couldnt make the turn lol.Seperated my shoulder, bike was ok though.

I wouldnt buy a new bike either though. They are stupid expensive, especially being your first bike. I havent looked up prices recently, but you can probaly get a nice low mileage 2007 for 4k or so?
I bought my 2007 suzuki gsxr 600 with 5k miles on it for 5200 but that was 3 years ago. And bought my 04 gsxr 600 for i believe 3700 or something but that was 4 years ago..

I have gotten away alot from street bikes though. I still own my streetbike but its a track bike now, i dont ride much road anymore. After awhile it gets pretty fustrating (because of my area i live in a very tourist area), having people cut you off alot, and having to deal with alot of traffic etc. Their is a track for cars/motorcycles half hour away so thats mainly what i do with the street bike now. Safer than the roads and actually gives you alot of riding skill

The reason I was planning on new is because of the financing. I haven't been able to find any real good certified pre-owned bike dealerships in my area.

it pays to be patient, can get really good deals on 600 cc bikes on craigslist from priv sellers

600 cc is ideal imo.. my 500 is more than enough but i want a 600 cc b/c more parts and shit

Depends on your experience with bikes.

If you have no experience, I wouldnt recommend a 600 Supersport to anyone.

Look into bikes like the FZ1 or FZ6, great Sport Touring bikes with a more relaxed seating position. They have pretty broad power bands also, so you dont have to worry about accidentally snapping the throttle.

However if your mind is set on super sports and you are short..
R6 is a good bike. I'm 5'7 and fit comfortable on one.. Never rode any other 600 class bikes but a lot of friends own GSXRs and swear by their reliability. Yamaha had transmission issues earlier on but they've kinked them out to my knowledge.

Edit: Forgot about these - 250 class (CBR / Ninja). You can pick up an 10/11 model Ninja for 2500 with like 2k miles on it and the CBR 250s will run you about 3000 with a few thousand miles. Look like the bigboy bikes with better gas mileage. They do have enough umph for highway speeds also. Would be a great starter bike, however you might outgrow its power if you decide to get stupid with bikes and use them for anything other than DD

I transitioned from 2 stroke 250s to an R6 and wouldnt recommend it. I did have to edit my post though about the 250s. Completely forgot about them as a viable option for beginners.

I never rode a bike prior to buying my first 600. I was fine, you just cant be a idiot..Be mature about riding . Bike only goes as hard as you twist the thorttle..be easy with it..

250s are a joke, youll get bored of them in 2 months

A lot of people ride 250s to college here. 60+ MPG - you cant beat it. They will do 100 on the highway and are great DD
