Check your egr, could be that.

Had the same problem on my work vehicle, fixed it last night.

it might be a suby thing. my friends mom is leasing a brand new forester, and it does the same thing

Oh, these Buffalo winters are retarded. So it's been a high of like 63, low of 27ish. So it does it in a range of temperatures.

Did you try getting it's attention... making sure it was looking at you, and while pointing a finger saying " No..... bad car.... stop it."
Probably should have been the first thing you tried. Plus its free :D
