When I am stopping for a light or stop sign I just press the clutch in while braking until I'm either stopped or the light has turned green, then shift into whatever gear is necessary.
I've heard all this talk about rev-matching, but I have no tachometer. Is my method hurting the engine/clutch at all?
I drive a '64 truck with 3 in the tree.

Absolutely not.

Your transmission will be fine.

its not going to hurt it. the only time you rev match is if you drive something without synchros in the transmission like a race car or semi. otherwise its pointless thats what the synchros are for.

what you are thinking of is double clutch. I rev match all the time when i downshift just cus it's a habit.

I rev match/downshift when I'm messing around but most of the time I hold the clutch in and brake to slow down.

Imo it's easier to replace brake pads than to drop the tranny and replace the clutch. If I'm gonna wear something it's going to be the cheaper/easier part.

I down shift and use engine braking while Im stopping. In that case I dont rev match. The only time I rev match is really just if I feel like it or if I plan on dropping down a gear to hit the gas.

yeah i dont rev match but i slow the car down and then downshift to the next gear and use the brakes and engine to slow the car. basically just like how i drive the semi

If you're rolling to a stop just pop it into neutral.

I downshift to slow down usually, like getting off of an exit ramp, etc.

Rev-matching is pointless in passenger cars, only good for kids who think they're driving a race car, only thing it's nice for is a smooth downshift, but even then it's pointless if you downshift at the right speed and ease it in with the clutch....

If you rev match than you dont need to use the clutch. Better for the clutch that way.

Some cars shift better without the clutch than others....in my Si I can shift fine without it, but in my friend's Scion it doesn't always go into gear, you REALLY need to force it.
