Yeah it's the original. It does smoke pretty bad though. Still haven't figure that out. Put a new fuel pump on it today and a charged the battery and it actually started and idled.... so of course I had to try to drive it down the street and back lol I Killed it about three houses down and it wouldn't start again. So we put a little gas in the carb and ta-da! Brakes work really well actually  ;)

The alternator isn't working though- gotta figure that out yet.

Upon closer examination of the 289, I could see it needed a lot more work than I was willing to put into it. So we decided to pull it out and start prepping for 302/t-5 tranny swap.

Glad we did pull it out... the second bolt holding the mount to the block was completely missing :( Kinda scary.

With the sale going on at CJ pony parts, I plan on picking up a modern driveline cable clutch conversion. No mechanical linkage = easy install and hopefully more room for the headers.

if it was me and i had the original 289 i would go for rebuilding it and going back to original. i would at least hold on to that motor and not get rid of it. if you ever decide to sell in the future no telling how much that would add to the value to have the original motor for it still.

looking over the pics again it really is a shame it seems you have quite a bit of original equipment still on that car. just dont hack it up too bad

I'm still considering the 289, nothings final yet (besides the T5). And nothings being 'hacked'

hopefully not it seems like you have a pretty original car and would hate to see you do something that would be regretted later maybe. have you considered making it back to more or less factory specs for a more original car?

btw is that one of those 25lb mallory coils on the firewall? i have one in the garage god that thing is heavy

Headers, clutch cable conversion, and a 3g alternator conversion kit are all on the way.

Decided to stick with the 289. So today I started tearing her down to make sure everything is all good inside...

I took the first bolt off the first manifold and felt it crumble as I pulled it out. It's a little old

The gaskets are all pretty new so I'm guessing he (or someone he paid) was down here at some point... hopefully everything looks good and I can just clean it up and replace the gaskets and call it a day.

And that's as far as I got today

With the motor out I decided to take a closer look at everything underneath and I only found two things I'll need to keep track of. I don't have the time or money or patience to fix either of these right now, but they're noted and will be fixed in the future!

Rust on the radiator support

And the beginning of a future PITA.

Overall though I'm pretty happy with how rust free and hole-less it looks under here.

Here's the T5 I mentioned earlier that had a crack in it. Turns out it was just on the top plate thing(idk too much about transmissions ) Seems easy enough to switch out.

And today I was talking to my dad about how clean it was... so he said let's go take a look. He grabs the wire wheel and cleans off a piston and tells me to read what it says (he's too old hahahaha)

Sure enough it's 40 over. SO that's pretty promising, but I did find a bent push rod with an indent in it when I took the heads off. Still need to look into that.
