In Massachusetts do I have to pay a sales tax to the dmv when I purchase a motorcycle from person to person? If so do they take tax percentage out from what I paid the person or the motorcycles actual value? First time trying to register a motorcycle under my name

You can always say you bought it for $1 then no tax I believe.

Yea if I the bike cost 5k, i would have just wrote down 1k for the tax

The $1 deal is only if you can prove it was a gift in which case they will cross reference previous owner to whoever you claim gifted it to you.

otherwise, you’ll get a bill.

For a used motorcycle, it’s not going to be a lot of money. Just be honest and pay it.

It costed me 385 usd total to get it registered and title change. It wasn’t too bad

you are lucky. Here in Michigan, they charge you based on the new value of the vehicle. They got tired of every car being sold in the state costing $100 and only getting $6.00 of taxes. My son bought a 99 eldorado, and had to pay close to $600 for transfer and plates to drive on the shittiest roads in America.

They just upped our cap in SC. It used to be 6% up to a max of $300 tax, now it's $500


Our property taxes are higher to compensate so they so I get their money. It's just funny that you can buy a $10,000 civic or a Bugatti and pay the same sales tax.
