this will be a huge announcement when it comes

As a poster on reddit discovered, tucked away on the fifth page of a recent GM service department document detailing the internal codes the company will use for its 2018 model year vehicles sits a table called “Passenger Car Engines for GMNA,” and at the end of the table lies the description of an utterly alien engine: ENGINE GAS CYL, 6.2L, SIDI, DOHC, VVT, ALUM, GM, It’s listed with the book code “Y,” which in internal GM parlance means it will only be available in the Corvette. And it has its own internal name: LT5.

We've been expecting this for a long time. The rumors of a mid engine vette started decades ago and it's finally happening with the C7. They have taken the front engine rwd platform about as far as they can. The only way to go significantly faster (especially in GT racing) is mid engine. If you go mid engine, the width, height, and weight of the power plant aren't nearly as critical as they are in a FR setup which was half the reason to stay with a traditional 45° small block. This will only be in the top dog model though. The LT design will be around for around very long time.

I don't follow Chevy news much, didn't know they were going mid-engined. That's pretty awesome honestly, that paired with a DOHC v8? Man that's gonna upset alot people. Both diehard crybaby Chevy fanbois, and Ford fanboys that can't seem to catch a glimpse of their headlights.

I'm just glad Chevy is making the move to DOHC. They're a huge player, and them refusing to develop performance DOHC tech is bottlenecking the industry.

What do you mean refusing to develop performance DOHC tech? They haven't done a DOHC V8 in 20 years and it was last offered in the top of the line vette. You are about to see the same thing again. Many people are wanting the mid engine vette to be launched as a separate model rather than a version of the corvette since it is going to be dramatically different and much more expensive than a Z06.

Literally everything they build besides the V8s are ohc. Look at the ATS-V. That bitch will make 600whp with down pipes and a tune.

Don't expect to see a DOHC v8 in a front engine performance car from gm for a long time. On my wish list is a twin turbo ZR1 with the typical GM 50% headroom on the fuel system and turbos. A tune and a boost controller away from 900-1000whp in an otherwise stock C7.

Ok, my bad. Performance DOHC V8.
20 years is a long time. And they attempted it back when it was, well it had been around for a while but wasn't nearly as developed as it is today.

You think they'll go TT Vette?
Have they ever done that before??

No they haven't. They are about to up the ante to at least 708hp to best the hellcat though. Superchargers aren't the way to get there even though they make a great driving car. The Z06 of this gen is supercharged. If they don't make the mid engine car the ZR1, the ZR1 will have a different setup than the Z06.

The camaro is a real possibility though because of the hellcat thing. There is already a mounting point for an intercooler and twins on the Gen 6 camaro.

It's LS architecture....
It's the same modular motor.
