"out the door" includes tax, and I've always paid cash, so that might not help you

Being a dick helps with negotiating prices, because they want and/or need to sell something.

Lol don't be a dick. You can negotiate good prices without making the salesperson want you to leave ASAP. If a dealership is successful, their sales staff is probably always selling. And sometimes they can get burned out. It's pretty easy to find an unmotivated seller if you're looking at a model that sells pretty fast anyways and you're not being a very nice client. If they are desperate to sell you a car in spite of a poor attitude on your part, I might be wary of the condition of the car.

And the answer to your question really depends on what you're going to buy. New? Almost new from new car dealership? Same from used car dealership? Older used?

Planning on financing? Most or just a little bit? All cash?

If there's going to be any blanket advice, buy from a dealership with a very good reputation, especially if they're a used dealer. And don't trust google or dealer rater. I know some pretty awful dealerships with amazing reviews.

You should get 5.9% on a first time buyer program, probably up to a20k loan

Don't trade in a car towards your new one is the first rule.

Don't be a dick that doesn't help.

Stand your ground when trying to negotiate price. If you want to spend 19,500 and they want 20,100 keep asking for 19,500 they will work with you if they want the sale.

Don't lease.

Try and get OEM all weather floor matts or other accessories you might want built into the deal so you can finance the accessories as well.

Idk where you live but Wisconsin all weather floor matts are always needed because winters here ruin your carpet matts.

5.9% is bad in my opinion.

I purchased a brand new car last year. I got a 2.9% rate and didn't bother shopping around for a better rate. My loan was around $26,000

I didn't even set foot on the dealership. Everything was conducted through emails and phone calls and my car was delivered to my house. I also got $2000 off the sticker price.

Look up the sales tax in your state so you're not surprised by how much money it will be in addition to the car.

You should get 0% APR on alot of new cars right now, its the end of the season. If not anything under 3% is typical, also the most you will get first time buyer is 15-20k MAX

Go in find a salesman you like, if you get someone you dont like I would just walk away.

Also, be respectful(always...) talk the talk then start talking business. Make sure they understand your situation.

Dont give them your phone number unless you are serious~! They will call you non-stop for like a month

But yea, don't rush anything. Do your homework and ask your parents or something. We have all had friends that fail and are miserable with a new vehicle their stuck with for 5 years plus.
