I had the same car with the same problem. Your diode is open and acting like the charging system is working fine when it's not. It is your alternator.
Easy way to check is, turn on your car, remove battery, if the car dies, it is because your alternator is not charging your vehicle. Once the car is on, it does not "necessarily" need a battery to continue functioning. That is what the alternator does.
Don't do this. That is NOT an appropriate way to test your alternator. It IS an appropriate way to potentially hurt something.
You'll probably have the new alternator swapped (and a working car) by the time you read this, but for the love of god, don't pull the battery with the car running.
The battery does a lot more than people realize. I was going to explain it, but instead of type on my phone i found a pretty basic article explaining.
http://www.troubleshooters.com/dont_disconnect_battery.htmA multimeter will tell you everything you'd need to know, in a matter of seconds, to determine if the voltage regulator is the problem. Which yeah, I agree. Your regulator sounds shot.
