Thinking about a KLR 650... I have ridden before on street only (for several years as only transportation...)

Too many close calls so I am not interested in a street bike, but a dual sport would be nice so i dont have to haul the motorcycle by trailer, although I would be open to the idea if a pure dirt bike is significantly better...

A ktm 350 EXC is a very nice dual sport. My buddy rides his strictly on dirt, but it is street legal. I wouldn't want to use it at very high rate of speed highway though.

the ktm 350 or 500 are great dual sports. Honestly, get a ktm, any of the jap dual sports are not worth it.

KTM 350 or 500 for sure. I want a 500 one day.

If you're on a. Budget and don't mind a small bike, the Honda CRF250L is a great bike for the price. Fuel injected 250 for around $4400 brand new.

they can do highway if you want to. My Wr250r with mx knobbies can do 90mph with stock sprockets. Yes it speedwobbles here and there, but it can cruise at 65-70 no problem

Personally im a big fan of the XR650. I used to take mine up to the Badlands offroad park all the time and it was a great ride. Wasn't great coming off 30ft tabletops but it is a dual purpose so i didn't expect it to lol. Never had any issues busting down the highways cruising past people either.
