So my dads moving and needs his 1997 31" Prowler Travel Trailer with a pop out moved about 30 miles or so
He has a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 with the V10 4x4 Ext Cab..etc.., it pulls it np at all but of course, its having tranny problems and wont go into first or second (i think manually it does idk)

I was going to TRY to see if my truck would pull it...it has the power and what not obv but its only a 1/2 ton
He used to have a 86 3/4 ton 2wd Dodge Ram that he used to pull it over 800 miles at one time lol...being that my truck is so much newer and much more powerful I was thinking it would at least be equal to that old 86 dodge 3/4 ton? Ram- 170hp/260tq Chevy 285hp/335tq , but idk how they compare suspension wise and what not

My truck may not like it but would it survive lol...the travel trailer has electric brakes.
I also think he has a set of sway bars for the camper.

My trucks a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1/2 Ton, 4x4, 3.73 Gears, Etx Cab, Tow Package, 10 Ply BF Goodrich Tires

Thanks

I'm assuming you have the 5.3? If so the trailer is 2-3 thousand pounds less than your towing capacity.

Yeah it will do it NP. I'm still jealous you found a truck of that body style that clean.

I work with a guy that pulled a 33' with a slide out with his 2007 5.3L regular cab 1500. He said it pulled it better than his 5.7L Tundra.

10 years ago my dad had a 99 step side regular cab Z-71 w/ the 5.3 and it pulled a 5,000lb tractor around on an aluminum car hauler. That is probably close to the same weight as the camper. It will have plenty of power to pull it just be mindful of stopping. That is really where 3/4 ton trucks shine. Do you have a brake controller in your truck? Without electric trailer brakes you will need to be very mindful of braking earlier than normal.

Oh yeah you are good then. With electric brakes that is exactly the type of stuff that truck was built to pull.

So long as he used Tow/Haul and his brain that truck would pull a 31 footer anywhere. The fuel mileage won't be pretty but that's not a shock. It's only a 6-7klb load.

I understand it's your opinion though.

right, he can, sure, its capable....

me personally i wouldnt use it as if that were the regular tow vehicle, but thats just me, i seen to much shit go wrong, most cases idiots but, the majority are people towing stuff that they probably shouldn't with a 1/2 ton

I pulled a 12k lb mini ex/trailer with a 1/2 ton once. That shit was not good. I didn't have a choice at the time though. The towing capacity has gone up on them a lot recently though. His model vs a 2014 is no comparison
