...but I figure this is the best group of people to ask around here. :)

I have a spare propane tank for the BBQ, but it's showing rust on the outside of it. Is there a product I can rattle-can on that'll neutralize the rust, before I repaint it? Would a rattle-can of Rust-Oleum be sufficient?

I considered that, but I don't want to be the guy that turns in a rusty tank for exchange.

The people won't care. For minimum wage they can't afford to care.

But if it makes you feel better rustoleum would work.

You'd be throwing away the money you spent on paint though, in my opinion.

But the mind is a funny thing sometimes.

Just trade it I do asphalt paving and we trade in 4-5 bottles a week some have been drug down the road, some have been dented in, some have road on the paver for years. They dont care and its really what your paying for the gas in the bottle is only like 10 bucks the other 10 is for the paint and safety check.

turn it in for a new one. you dont know how deep the rust may be and it might eventually develop a pinhole that leaks gas out. that would be highly dangerous.

safety says get a new tank dont be an idiot thats why they have exchanges for those tanks.

That's my concern, actually. I don't want to turn in a potentially rusty tank, if it's just gonna go back into circulation.

On the part of the businesses taking in the cylinders for exchange, I don't know what kind of quality control they run, or if there's some kind of standard for testing tanks, before they're refilled.

There is. There is also an expiration date. You would have to look it up but its around 7-10yrs from the date of manufacture on the tank.

That's good to know! I'll feel like less of a bastard, then, taking back an old tank. :D

Thanks guys. :)

Just trade it in with anywhere that uses blue rhino, When you trade in your tank with blue rhino they test each tank then refurbish them before reselling.
