I ordered HP Tuners MPVI Pro and an AEM UEGO wideband. I also picked up The Tuning School's Beginner's guide to tuning. All in all it's just shy of $1,000 and I still need to buy a cheap 11.6"-15" laptop to run it on. The HP Tuners suite retails for $650, the Tuning school program is $400, and the UEGO is a little over $200. SDPC is running a 10% off sale on their tuning bundles and I got another kickback for ordering the wideband at the same time.

I've officially taken the next step with this hobby. Once I get a handle on this, which will take some time, I will be able to take a car from showroom stock and change anything I need to without paying for any outside help. The only thing I am not set up for is advanced fabrication. I can make small brackets and things like that but I am no TIG welder. Luckily nearly everything required to mod the cars I enjoy wrenching on can be bought for barely more than it costs to make.

I stand to save myself a lot of money in the long run with the Formula due to boosted cars needing constant tuning adjustments. My friends will benefit as well once I am comfortable enough to tune their stuff. The closes tuner we trust is 4hrs away and about $500 for an N/A tune. I will be able to do it for $100 + beer and pizza.

It's a lot to bite off at once though. This shit is really complicated if you are doing it right. One thing I have going against me is I will be learning on the silver T/A which has unknown head porting, an unknown cam, unknown tune, and aftermarket injectors. I might have to go back to stock injectors and get the part throttle tuning down, then swap the 42lb injectors back in and change the injector offsets. I enjoy this sort of thing though. It is very technical and very puzzle like. Every car and situation is different and you have to full understand every sensor and PCM table's role in the tune.

Nice, learning how to tune is so worth the time and effort you need to put in to properly learn it.

Take it from me because I know from personal experience, be careful and take it slow.

^^ this. I'd see what's on tigerdirect or newegg.

Not sure what the requirements are for the software you need to run, but maybe you could get away with running it on a cheap Netbook?

WOT tuning doesn't phase me. It's the nuances of part throttle tuning that takes so long to learn. This is also an N/A car so its much simpler to get into than a boosted setup.

I found a few but I think I know someone that might sell me a used one on the low. 1ghz, 512mb ram are the req. A full size keyboard with a good touchpad is more important imo. I'll be clicking and editing numbers in a lot of tables. I bought my little sister an ultrabook last year and I think she has her old one still. Windows 7 too... NN Win8.

Dell 910 Notebook

It's small, so it lives well in the car. The one I am using in my Datsun was like 100 bucks on ***. You don't need anything fancy, unless you are using this as a personal laptop too, which I don't recommend. Go for the best battery life.

My 910 still uses windows XP (Tunerstudio doesn't care), has a 4 hour battery life, and fits neatly under the seats when I am not worried about it. Heck, it'll even internets a bit if you ask it.

I recommend Dell products for bang:buck ratio.

Thats more or less what I was looking at. I even found some refurb thinkpads with good hardware on newegg for cheap. I'm going to hold out a few days for one that is cheap to free.
