Old car crapped out on me, about to start fall semester of college.

I found this. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/3923665168.html

Called the guy, he says it has a prior salvage title (he bought it from an auction). It was in a wreck but he only had to replace the front bumper, grille, and headlights. I'm going to make a full inspection before even offering, but I can't understand why the insurance company would total the car for so little damage. Any ideas what's up here?

Not really though. 95% of the cars near me are in Missouri, where everyone is a dealer or a rip-off artist or usually both. I've literally gone to look at nearly 10 cars and all of them have had hidden mechanical issues.

There have only been 2 cars so far I really liked, and both were sold withing 2 hours of their posting. I never even got to see them in person.

Don't be stupid. Just because you're in a specific area doesn't mean there aren't good cars around. Your looking at a salvage title solara that is priced higher than a clean solara should be. Do your homework.

If I bring my mechanic (close friend), and he says it checks out, what are you thinking it's worth with the salvage?

EDIT: I mean, here's my situation. I appreciate the advice greatly, but I'm very limited. I'm really only searching for Toyotas (Camry, Corolla, Solara), Hondas (Accord), and Buicks (Regal, Park Avenue). I need something with 100k or less miles so it will last me a while, and then my budget is $6k tops.

Oops asked a stupid question. I don't suggest buying this car though. It's not the one I hauled off, but it's incredibly similar. The bottom end was going on that one.

Salvage means it was totaled, and bought back. The bumper, grille, and headlight, is not all that was done. Offer them half of what they're asking.
