2007 DD60 12.7L engine. problem im having is when im making the most amount of boost at around 1.5k rpm and you let off the fuel simply to let off or change gears, i hear a big whooshing sound of air. im also experiencing more black smoke than i should be on acceleration. the smoke is not heavy black smoke but its definitely a noticeable amount.

im not really experiencing any power loss so i dont think the turbo itself is going bad or losing boost. im thinking its either the wastegate actuator valve starting to fail or possibly vpod problems. im not sure what symptoms a bad vpod would have though. ive already told the mechanic and he seems to think its probably the actuator but he hasnt really looked it over yet. the actuator arm has a little bit of freeplay in it, is that normal or should it be tight with no freeplay? ive also noticed at about 1.9k rpm or higher that the turbo starts making a sound different than normal. kind of hard to explain but its almost like a thrashing sound maybe.

iso opinions on what people with turbo knowledge thinks it may be.

Sounds like the wastegate is failing to me. When you notice the sound (when shifting) does it sound like the turbo is surging?
At higher RPM's the problem could be over spinning the turbo due to the wastegate having free-play in it, causing it to "flutter" or chatter

nah its just more of a whoosh sound like air rushing out of it. i wasnt sure on the surge but i looked at a few youtubes of it and if its that fluttering turbo sound mine dont do that. the only other thing ive noticed which i believe most of ours does it is at an idle it sounds like the turbo kicks in and out a lot. like its idling and you hear the turbo out by the stack and then it goes away and then you hear it again. under load driving though the turbo sounds fine other than what ive described.

im hoping the next time our traveling mechanic from dundee michigan comes in i can meet up with him and get him to hear what its doing. i dont like the thought of maybe a turbo blowing or something while im out on the road.

sorry for the shaky ass video i was holding my phone while merging onto a 4 lane highway and shifting gears lol. anyways when i shift you can hear it making the sound. this is my first videos ive uploaded onto youtube!! sec this is the weird turbo noise at top end of rpms. you can hear the whooshing slightly lmk post the other video also. this ones kind of hard to hear it but at about 1.8k-1.9k rpm the turbo goes from a whistle to more of a chatter or something.
