I've always been an NA guy, but I'd like to know a little bit more about turbos and power adders. Namely because some douche I knew in high school is always flaunting the fact that I don't mess with them.

Why does it help for the top diameter of the pipe to be bigger than the bottom?

Reason I'm asking:

I think maybe he is referring to the fact that the flange of the downpipe is determined by the turbo being used. I can't see the flanges to see if they are the same flange, but he could be inferring that one one the left is for a larger turbo than the downpipe on the right uses. The flanges look slightly different. And the 3'' diameter matters, although generally I disagree with reducing at all from the downpipe, but I can understand space constraints etc. You can't have too big of an exhaust with a turbocharged system.

What I don't understand is how the pipe on the left is in anyway an upgrade to the pipe on the right if both go into the same diameter on the bottom.

nah, he just put more heat wrap to make it look biger
and if both those down pipes are for the same turbo, he has port match problems

If it is indeed tapered, the purpose of the taper is pretty much to have the exhaust gasses compress the whole downpipe, then let the taper slightly re-compress and "guide" it to the end, thereby "organizing" the exiting air, making sure it has laminar flow prior to exiting the exhaust system.

Turbo's push alot of exhaust gas's out if the pipe is small and restrictive it was raise the exhaust gas temp and cause pre ignition, leaning and destruction of the engine.

Better flow = more power.

the one on the left looks like it has either a divorced or bellmouth wastegate, while on the right it looks to have a blocked off wastegate.

they are both t25 flanges, the one on the left is for a True T28 and bigger turbos that's externally gated off the manifold, the one in the right is for a t25 that's internally gated..


Simple

left = 300hp - 600hp
right = 150hp - 250hp

It looks like a 240sx/silvia downpipe so i'm sure hes stepping up to a bigger turbo.
