Hello.

I would like to ask what are some techniques/ tactics than I can use to convince an elderly individual that they are no longer fit to drive and should give up driving....

My grandma is not fit to drive and got into a minor, non serious accident today. I was hoping this would be the wake up call she needed to voluntarily quit driving but she is adamant she will continue to drive...
I have previously asked her to stop driving with no success, but now as a result of this minor accident I feel I need to act quickly before something serious happens.

I have tried the following but have failed to convince her to quit.

- offered to drive her to appointments, grocery shopping, important events and so fourth
- attempted to explain to her that she is a danger to herself and others when driving and she should do the right thing and stop endangering her own life and the lives of others
- Told her that I will be forced to call her family doctor and alert them of the situation and/or call the insurance company to alert them as well. I want this issue to be resolved in as dignified a manner as possible, I do not want to be making those calls....

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Lol goodluck dude, my grandmother was half blind and continued to drive. Personally I think it should be up to the states to start giving driver tests and visual tests etc again once a certain age is hit, it's their fault I say.

get her doctor to say she's not fit to drive

edit: it's the same thing as sending someone to a Nursing home, you just gotta do it

That sounds kind of like a tough call but why not let a person that can charm her convince her that she needs a chauffeur? If a personal driver is out of the question maybe car pooling with other people of around her age? From what I've observed with my elders...elders love being around other elders and talking about whatever they like together among people of same interests...

I mean elders are people that have just lived much longer lives than youngsters right??? Just like Potheads love talking about weed among other potheads and conspiracy theorists love talking about "things"...it seems like your Grandmother is just really stubborn and wants to be Awesome...by showing that she's and elder that knows how to drive...

If she really is bent on driving...why not let her go to a few driving courses??? NOT TOO FAST THOUGH BECAUSE THAT JUST MAY CAUSE too much adrenaline to be pumped throughout her system...which may cause complications.

Hope I've been able to give some sort of advice...

not sure how savy your gradmother is, but maybe she will not drive anywhere if the car doesnt start. id say just unhook the car battery or completely remove it.
