So this friend of mine got a puppy recently, an Italian greyhound.
Cool dog, but man oh man does he need human interaction. Like no joke.

My friend lives alone, and has to leave the puppy by himself while she's at work...
But the puppy can hardly stand his owner going to the bathroom without him tagging along, let alone being left by himself in the house.
He gets super nervous/anxious when left alone for more than 10 seconds, which is probably causing his diarrhea, and he pees and shits all over her house when she goes to work.
So now, for the past week, he's been getting crated while she works, and every time he destroys everything in his crate, pees and shits and rolls in it...

She's cleaning up the mess every night, but it's obviously wearing on her.
What can she do?
She doesn't really have anyone who could watch him while she's gone. She was thinking maybe another puppy for company, but wants other options too.

Unfortunately, she got a puppy too young for her living situation.

Young pups require the attention hers is craving.

If she's capable of getting another pup, have her adopt an older one.

Yes yes, that's exactly what I thought when she had me over.
But she's just able to make rent right now. She spent $900 on this guy, pretttty sure another dog is probably out of the question, though she did mention how nice it would be for him to have an older dog to learn from...

If she can't get another dog, and doesn't want to give him away, what can she try?
I'm basically looking for ways to chill the dog out, and make him more comfortable in his crate and/or alone.
For example, leaving the TV/radio on, and feeding him [unlocked] in his crate to get him used to the fact that that's his home & he shouldn't trash it.

if she can't afford to take care of him, she shouldn't have him in the first place

that's just cruel

only option in this case: find someone nearby to leave him with during the day to take the responsibility she can't shoulder

Ask the doctor about xanex... no joke, give the dog a small pill before you leave, and it will be worn off by the time you get home, and it should alleviate some of the stress of being alone.

It's a common mistake new owners make is getting a second dog in hopes "company" will fix the issues. While 9 times out of 10 getting another dog will equal two dogs with the same problem. Dogs have a pack mentality and will react together.
"oh the dog that was here first is doing this, must be okay and expected. I shall do it as well."

It honestly sounds like a puppy isn't something she should have got. The puppy needs to be put on a schedule to properly reinforce potty training.
A puppy cannot be left alone for 8 hours a day and expect it not to go to have accidents.
Any dog needs both mental and physical stimulation.
The puppy needs a walk twice a day at least.
Kongs can help with mental stimulation while the dog is crated. However it's not an end all solution. When is she going to neuter the dog?
She should call up the breeder she got the dog from and ask questions.
Research.

An option is doggy daycare. But do your research before taking your dog to any daycare. Ask questions.
For example a daycare in my area has had deaths due to fights. Dog fights happen but what precautions are they taking now, that they didn't before to prevent this from happening?
But a daycare is not a solution for being tired after a 9-5 and not training the dog.

It's harsh, but nothing I said is incorrect.

my friend said his puppy needed to pee every n hours for n months old. so when it was 3 months old, needed to pee every 3 hours. dont get a puppy if you're not gonna be there with it. get an older dog for sure.

I'm sorry but it's cruel to have a dog and leave it at home whilst you are at work. They are hugely dependable - even more so when a puppy.

Cats you can do that because they are independent - This would've been the pet for your friend
