Hi! So I have a little dog, wiener and chihuahua mix, a few years old, and he's very little. He's getting a bit out of shape, and I wanted to know if you guys have any diet food recommendations or anything you use for your dog? o:

I've never had to put a dog on a diet, so I'm not too sure what steps to take. He gets lots of exercise, but I'm going to give him even more, and he drinks lots of water each day, and has his bowl of food, just like kibbles n bits or something, for meals. I'm going to lower the quantity of how much I give him too. I don't give him human treats, and don't give much dog treats, but I'm not sure if there are diet dog treats at all.

Now last month, my other dog passed away, who has been there even before I had my wiener/chi, and the death of him has really not settled with my wie/chi yet. He's still getting used to it, and he's a bit lonely but I'm spending lots of time with him giving him lots of attention. I think it's making his eating habits out of wack, so I don't know how much longer that will last.

Anyway,
do you guys ever diet your dog to make them lose a few pounds?
And if so, do you guys use any specific food brands or types, and any other methods that I haven't mentioned?

thank you c:

Exercise > diet. I have an greedy dog thats mainly eating dry kibble with some raw meat but he is in great shape. Little dogs tone up fast :)

The dog will eat when he is hungry dont worry too much, If you focus too much on the food the dog wont eat so much. Bowl down for 20 mins then remove, If he doesnt eat he will be hungry tomorrow.

that's true, thank you for that!

today i'm just going to let him chill out, he had a real rough night last night, he got into these old european diet chocolate covered raisins someone left out, and the diet factor, and then the chocolate factor, and then the raisin factor made it a huge triple threat, and i was up until 6am checking on him, trying to make him throw up while i was on the phone with an ER vet who told me to shove peroxide down this throat but he wouldn't throw it up lol..

so today i'm just going to let him use the bathroom lots and clear his system before i try to change his diet on him and increase his exercise. ^_^

thank you again!

sorry, I don't recall making a thread dedicated to motivating and asking a question about you for you to work out and start a diet. i think you should make your own thread about that if you're so concerned in the health and fitness section.

haha, but in all seriousness, he looks more like dobby the house elf. :p he's just a big baby is all.

I usually mix some dry food with quarter to half a can of wet food, 1 egg some bread, or whatever leftovers in the fridge that I won't eat (meats or vegetables, no sugary or fast food).

Some times she'll eat it right there and then, sometimes she won't and it'll sit there till supper time or whenever she feels hungry again.

Shes a 4 year old boxer pitbull cross.

but to the op
while exercise is important, food supply is more important for most dog breeds
since they are opportunity feeders most dogs are greedy and eat all that is available
if your dog is getting out of shape, reduce the food intake but ensure there is plenty fresh water
in worst case you can let your dog stay hungry for two or three days (but only needed if a severe problem)
hopefully everything normalises once your little one is over the death of your other one
