just wondering
a few years ago when i lived in a different area i encountered only very few other dogs when walking mine but now since i moved i encounter plenty other dogs including some quite rare breeds
yes, there are many cross-breeds and golden retrievers / labradors stand out from the large dogs but there is plenty variety as well - definitely more than 50 different breeds

around here in wisconsin its mainly german shepards, collies, australian shepards, black brown and white labs, rottweilers boxers and pitbulls.

which are the only real dogs in my opinion. anything under 60lbs is just a rat in the vague shape of a dog

wouldn't go that low with the weight (eg springer spaniels and border collies are nice dog breeds as well) but i do understand the sentiment, just a few days ago i told a couple walking a chihuahua on the beach that they should be careful because a pebble behind them was moving ;)

but let me try to recall the breeds which you would consider dogs i encountered recently:

bernese mountain dog
german shepherd
belgian shepherd (malinois & tervuren)
bearded collie
labrador retrievers (black, brown and yellow)
golden retriever
curly coated retriever
pointer
gordon setter
english setter
irish setter
irish red and white setter
weimeraner
german shorthaired pointer
airedale terrier
bull terrier
american pitbull
doberman
rottweiler
boxer
dalmatian
greyhound
samoyed
malamute
siberian husky

raking my brain there might even be more, plus let's give 'honorable' mention to the modern mxture labradoodle

what a pity, it's always a pleasure to meet a new breed, was lucky today and ran into my first tibetan spaniel
though that would not make the large dog list i started above, i remembered two other ones i met recently:

a pair of great danes (the female was 'smallish' at ~150 pounds while the male was heavy at ~250 pounds)
and of the many different poodle sizes i encountered one was a giant (or standard) poodle making the large dog grade

Unique breeds? At least 20 - medium to large dogs only, I don't fuck around with toys.

I'd put that weight at like 45lbs honestly, although I know what you mean - little dogs are not real dogs IMO.

yeah, where i live dogs are kind of rare to meet. i live in a military town and sadly when i come across one, it's abandoned and homeless. i used to work in a grooming shop and would meet all different kind of breeds! :)

yesterday ran into another breed i hadn't seen for more than 10 years: puli

btw, rather than using weight i discriminate more for height but i fully understand that there are many people who cannot handle a strong dog so smaller breeds have their place as well
an energetic larger dog is not the ideal pet for older people or a family with small children but some of the very small breeds are a bit ridiculous

Anything smaller then like a blue heeler isn't a dog.

good you mention a working dog, on purpose some were bred smaller, just look at the shettie or corgi
and look at the dachshound, which other hounds can go into a badger's sett?

btw, a good blue heeler (as used in queensland) will rarely make your 45lbs limit :D
