So for a few days I've heard what I thought was a bird, crying outside my window.

Turns out it's a calico kitten, about the size of a small bunny rabbit. Can't be more than a few months.

I put out some ham and he came and ate it, but wouldn't leave the shadow of the bushes which are on either side of my front porch.

I tried to put more inside my door, where there's a cat door, but he just kinda circled around the front porch and cried and eventualy ran back into the bushes.

He wasn't answering when I put the food/water dishes outside, so I cut up a ups box and lined it with some grocery bags and a kitchen towel, and taped up 3 sides of the flaps so he had a little cat bed that could protect him from the wind.

Not sure what else to do, and he's being very quiet now.

Any advice on how to gain the little guy's trust? I would like to adopt him. :)

Also, could anyone help me start finding a clinic that would do free or discounted spaying? Would they do his shots discounted?

I honestly think this is the best option. Don't wait for it to come to you, you should go to it and bring it in.

I know via Petsmart some have an attatched banfield pet hospital
And my family and I got out lovely dog there spayed for a discounted price

And IMO, don't pick it up and scare it like hell, the thing is tiny, no need to over work it's heart.
I've rescued many cats, and the best way IMO, is to associate your self to the cat with good things.
Such as food.
Let the cat be aware that you are taking care of her.
Let her know that you are pitting food outside for her.
Maybe sit outside a little bit and convince her that you are okay.
