i recently got a new tank, and my ph and nitrites and ammonia are all good, i used the 'quickstart' nitrogen cycle formula before adding my fish as the pet store clerk recommended, the first guppy that died which was kinda translucent it was odd that the stomach was solid white and the gills were very swollen, those are the only symptoms that i could tell, and another one of my female guppies is starting to go downhill fast, her gills are starting to look kind of swollen too and she is becoming very inactive ( just sitting on the very bottom of the tank, which is what the other one did all day yesterday, and she died today :( )

if anyone could help i would very much appreciate it of the remaining fish in my tank i have 2 female guppies, 1 male, 1 mixed fruit tetra, and 2 cory cats

How long did you let your new tank set before adding fish? It also sounds like you added all of the fish at once, which can cause stress levels to skyrocket for the fish. The temperature may also play a factor if it differed from the temperature of the water at the pet store. All of these factors can cause your fish to go into shock.

Also, avoid listening to pet store clerks if at all possible. They have a nasty habit of not knowing jack sh*t about the animals they're suppose to be caring for. Buy yourself a nice book and research the fish you want to get before buying.

before i added any fish, my tank set for 2 weeks, while every other day i was adding bacterial supplement to it. the day i got the fish i took a container of water with me to the store and they tested it and told me everything was fine.

well to the best of my research my fish had a bacterial disease called columnaris. it has all of the same symptoms: swollen gills, paralysis, deteriorating fins ect. also says the easiest way a fish will get it, is by a contaminated

catching net. this was a brand new shipment of fish the petstore (another thing i won't be doing) had gotten so i think that one of them may have already had the disease (its supposedly highly contagious). i called the petstore and informed them that nearly half of the fish

i had purchased died from this disease. i never asked for a refund or never accused them of being responsible, all i said was they may want to clean their catching nets..... and then the woman i was talking to exploded..

telling me that their wonderful store had never, NEVER, EVER lost a fish to any disease or illness ( i think i have to call bullsh*t on them never having lost a fish) and that the disease had to have come from the environment i introduced them to.

i added one fish at a time to the tank but i didnt wait longer than a minute per fish, but i am willing to take full responsibility for the fish dieing i was just wanting the petstore to know that some of their fish may be contaminated so they could treat them

anyway i will not be doing business with this petstore anymore

thanks you two for the advice

That's too bad that the store clerk got on you like that. Unfortunately, fish are generally harboring a crap ton of diseases already. They're not going to pick them up from the environment 90% of the time. Diseases in fish generally show up when they're under stress, which can reduce the effectiveness of their immune systems. Pet store = huge amount of stress, especially if they just got a shipment.

yea, thats what my boss told me (found out he was a fish keeper lol) and my remaining 3 fish (2 cory's and a female guppy) are doing great! and i am really excited that the female guppy is preggers :D i thought she was still sick for a while, and then i noticed the black looking sack to the back of or stomach and did a little research and found that those were the babies. that has been a few days ago and it seems like every day she puffs up a little bigger lol wish me luck!
