I'm thinking about getting my girl a turtle for christmas

---I'm not toooo concerned with the price of the turtle itself, but more concerned about living expenses because i don't want her to have to pay a whole lot to keep it.

---Looking for one that's very easy to maintain, preferbly non-aquatic.

---Food should be also inexpensive.

--Also, any tips would be helpful.

I fell like there are probably better gifts to get than a turtle, but whatever...

As a kid two of my friends had siblings with turtles. They didn't seem to do much, so I'd say the time commitment is about equivalent to a fish.

A turtle is not an advisable gift pet. They live forever and she will be stuck with it.

Turtles are all aquatic dude, you may be thinking of a tortuous. However, Mississippi Map Turtles are cool if you can find one they are smaller than the average snapper and a ten gallon tank is sufficient for years. I always feel that one turtle is lonely though.

Turtle food comes like fish food its just little pellets.

you can get a ten gallon turtle tank for like $30 that already has a pre-cut hole in the center of the backside of the tank for a filter. filters run $15-40 dollars for a decent one look to spend at least 25.

a decent sized rock to climb on free-20$ depending on where you live. Some fish tank gravel or aqua-sand $10 a tank top heat lamp $35 unless you get a shitty one. Food $5

and you can find the turtle I suggested for around $15

so about $135 to start and $5 dollars for food every once in a while.

Overall turtles are cool but its not a cheap set-up to start.

- You must clean the tank on the regular otherwise it smells like swamp literally.
- You must handle the turtle regularly otherwise it will bite. Sometimes they do anyway.
- You must not forget that even though its not a cat or a dog its still an animal and you have made a commitment to take care of it.
- If you decide you no longer want the turtle it is not ok to release it into the wild you need to find a new home for it.

Just know that a turtle is more work than it seems to be.
Also note that animals are always bad ideas for gifts.

Hope that helps
