I'm thinking about getting a small snake about this big:

or maybe this:

Anyone have experience with snakes? Not to sound too much like a skinflint, but about how much / month is the upkeep?
Im working on getting a job to help pay, but I do have some funds to help in the beginning.

And a snake this size would eat crickets or mice?

pretty low cost actually

They only eat once a month usually. Or once a week. Either way, not that much.

You will have to buy more of those woodchips for the cage here and there which can't be too expensive.

But you will have to keep a heat lamp plugged in at all times.

i would recommend a ball python as a first time snake, they cost around 150 dollars for a juvenile. Monthly costs are about 20-30 dollars after mice, cypress bedding, etc.

expect to pay around 300 for everything you need, terrarium, heating lamp, heating rock, soaking bowl, etc.

start him out in at least a 30 gallon tank. do not start with a 10 gallon, he will outgrow it very fast and its just worth it to buy the 30 gallon tank.
