I'm thinking about getting one but anyone know if there good dogs? I'm pretty sure there good with other dogs cause there used as sled dogs. I currently have a dog that's part German Shepperd and black lab and was trained as a hunting dog when it was younger but it's now around 11-12 years old which is why i'm kinda looking at a new dog. I'm not planning on making my new dog used for hunting. I don't be getting the new dog till my other dog passes so it might be awhile. I plan on moving to Alaska sometime for a few years so i would like to have a new dog when i do so. From what i've been looking they range from $700-$1200 for a puppy but that's probably AKC puppy's. I'll most likely buy the doh when I'm in Alaska most likely from someone that does dog sledding so i know the parents were strong and they were kept well strengthened. Thanks to who ever helps.

Here's some of the information i found on the dog.

Country of Origin: USA/Alaska
Group: Working
Use today: Sled dog
Life Span: 10 to 14 years
Color: Various shades of gray and black, always with white on underbodies, parts of legs, feet and face. The markings on the face should be cap- or masklike. The only solid color allowed is white. Blue eyes are a disqualification.
Coat: Coarse, standoff coat with heavy undercoat
Grooming: Brush weekly
Height: Males, 24 to 26 inches; Females, 22 to 24 inches.
Weight: Males, 75 to 105 pounds; Females, 65-90 pounds.

Other information
Named for an Inuit tribe, the Mahlemut, this breed is a powerful member of the spitz family of dogs. The Alaskan Malamute has been used to track large game and as a pack and sled dog able to transport heavy loads over rough terrain. In Inuit villages, the Malamute doubled as a family pet and guard dog, even, serving as a nanny to children at times. The Malamute is the legendary freighting dog of polar expeditions, and during the two World Wars the breed served the military with valor. The Malamute has adapted well to warm climates, although it prefers the winter months. This large, strong dog needs daily exercise and is an ideal choice for people who enjoy winter sports. Regular activity and firm, consistent training will help channel its energy. Physically, the Malamute is a substantial dog with triangular ears and a waving plume of a tail. Males stand about 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 85 pounds; females are usually 2 inches shorter and 10 pounds lighter. Colors can range from light gray to black with white markings. The thick, coarse coat sheds heavily and should be brushed about three times a week. An affectionate, friendly dog, the Malamute is playful with children. It's not known as a watchdog, but its size is likely to deter strangers.

My friend had one. From what I've seen they're insanely overprotective and don't make a good family dog as they aren't the easiest dogs to train.
They require retarded amounts of exercise and will jump around all day long xD.

The one my friend had was pretty cute, but he won't listen to anyone but my friend. They have the mentality of "I have 1 owner, I'm only listening to him" kind of thing.

Very special dog if you ask me though. They're beautiful :)

I see, I was planning on getting it as a puppy and just train it from a young age. From what I've read there not much of a guard dog but it all matters on the dogs personality. They are pretty beautiful dogs which is why i want one. The exercise part don't really bother me cause that will give me exercise playing with it. :P

They need to run and they like cold places. I don't know where you live but he'll suffer if it's really hot all year round :(

They are working dogs. They need excess amount of outdoors time. If you don't have an acre for them to play in or don't do miles of runs with them, they will most likely run away to adventure on their own

Yeah i know this. I plan on buying around 20 acres of land when i move to Alaska which is enough for it to run. And i don't mind running with it. That would help keep the dog in good condition and keep me in shape. Just that might be a tad bit hard to do during the winters in Alaska.
