In a few years I'd like to get a St Bernard. I love these dogs. I was wondering what kind of temperament do they have, and what is different about them in terms of care that is different from other dogs. Also, what would the average cost of a puppy be?

for the official breed standard http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/061A2004_en.doc

they are very heavy and strong dogs as you probably know - very friendly and good natured in general
but not really suited to a warm climate (especially the long haired variety)
no idea on the cost but since you want to get one in a few years time only, the cost can be considerably different:
there will be a price floor for dogs of that size but fashion will determine the actual price at the time of purchase
(fashionable dog breeds are considerably more expensive than non-fashionable breeds of similar size/characteristic)

Thanks :) And I live in Maine, it's generally colder here. Although our summers can get quite warm, but I'll make sure to have ways for the dog to stay cool...

I have a St. Bernard, she's about 6 years old now. So mild mannered, love her to death. :)

Definitely a great choice of breed imo!

My friend had 2 st Bernards.

The first one was adorable, he was obviously huge and did not know that he's massive... He was extremely friendly and loved affection. Unfortunately he had to be put to sleep at an early age because of constant seizures...

The second one used to be just as loving, but I did not see him for almost a year till last week where his first reaction was to attack me. I love dogs and I'm pretty good with them so I wasn't scared and tried to comfort him. After some time with him
he was becoming more friendly. He's very friendly with family members, but not with strangers...

Both his dogs are locked in solarium most of the day with little to no contact with anyone but the family members who also don't show much love, that's why he's like that I guess.

BUT!!!!! If you raise them right they can be adorable, but I do not recommend a dog like a st Bernard as a first dog. They are massive and hard to handle.
