you guys must not have experience with guard dogs?

it doesn't matter what type of dog it is, all the matters is how its trained

i live in the country and my black lab (crossed with husky and malamute) has defended against black bears, lynx (if thats what bob cats are), coyotes and wolves

i've personally seen it go after every one of those animals and the animal has run away because it acts so agressive, even though it would not stand a chance against them

Wild animals run because if they get injured then their chances of survival go drastically down. To them, it's not worth a fight to travel on some land that is completely identical to the next patch of forest. For your dog, if he gets hurt he still has a means of survival - you. And THIS patch of land is HIS patch of land.

true

i should mention that my acreage is surrounded by crown land and is not fenced off, and i have no neighbours

only a few times has he defended animals in our property

most other times i have encountered the animals while going on hikes with him, and its always the same result
