Looking at buying a shiba inu puppy, itll be my 1st dog, it was between that or a Japanese Spitz.

has anyone had one of these before?. some opinions or thoughts.

GET A VIZSLA!!! there the most lovable dogs ever, great alarm dog, (terrible guard dog) and they dont smell. my vizsla has not had a bath in 6 months and she STILL doesn't smell. at all! they love to play fetch btw!

they are just called shibas... inu means dog in japanese 犬

My mom has a mame shiba (just a smaller version of a shiba)
Little hyper, but overall a good dog.

they have a fairly typical northern breed temperment. they are highly independent, highly active and extremely intelligent.
They do have a high pray drive.

If you are in the US, I would be glad to help point you in the right direction. I am good friends with a few Shiba breeders in the New England region, but I have contacts all over the country as well.

mame shiba's are not a breed, just another gimmick for conning people, like 'miniature' pomeranians, there is no such thing, they are just undersized poorly bred specimens of the SAME breed.
