the above groups are those given by the UKC: http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/WebPages/LrnBreedInfoByGroup which has a longer list of recognised breeds than the AKC, the only longer one i know is the FCI list but that has 10 categories (too many for a poll here)
if you are not sure which group your favorite breed belongs to, the link given has the complete list of UKC recognised breeds
if you can't find it there try to work the group out by breeds similar to it
(*) the other is for 'new' breeds like labradoodle or for cross-breeds

Voted Herding Dog, I'm kind of biased because I have one but they are very energetic so fun dogs to play with, have very nice soft coat on them.

My first dog was a border collie and was the best dog you could ever ask for, sadly he had canine epilepsy and had to be put down. I would definitely get another one they are very loyal family dogs and great if you have room for them to run, I lived in town(small town) and live right across the street from a bigger park so he could run all he wanted over there.

northern breeds aka (Working Group) for me
Although I have handled in at least one breed in each group. Siberians are my heart dogs. I prefer an independent temperment.
tha AKC has been deliberating for a long time about expanding their group listing as well, due to too many breeds in a group (for dog shows) and some breeds that do not fit in their respective groups.
