ive seen many people use these collars effectively for training their dogs, but ive also seen people who are 100% against them for being inhumane
i think the people who are against them arent using them correctly (i.e. on smaller dogs) because on dogs like boxers it pinches the extra skin and does not hurt them

I have a different choke chain (no spike) but it does a bit of strangling.
It is pretty effective at slowing down my older/larger pitbull.

Then again, so does yelling at her (she WAS trained but she has been moved around so much, she is losing it + she's older now so no need).

My lab mix has one (mainly for when he was younger, he's older now and not nearly as pully), and it was mostly for my mom, who he didn't really listen to back then, if he saw something interesting he would pull until she went over and looked at it too. I was concerned about the possible pain he could be experiencing, so I popped it on my neck and gave it a yank. Yeah it was really uncomfortable but not to the extent that it would cause real harm, plus his skin and hair are no doubt much thicker than mine :P and he never yelped or gave any sign of pain when using it so I guess it was ok. We probably should have trained him a bit more though, a bit irresponsible on our part :(

They work but there are other options.
It's really up to you and your feelings towards it.
They can be used and not harm your animal just feel like you are. The issue is some people just use them to aggressively.

i've never had to use one, however if you get a dog at a pound or it's just a big and potentially dangerous dog, it's necessary.

That is not a choke chain. That is whats called a prong collar.
90% of the population does not know how to use one properly, and they can be very inhumane when used improperly.
I have been training dogs for more than 20 years, and have never found it necessary to use a prong collar. Ever.

It is a gimmick and neither teaches the dog anything, or the owner.

No good trainer would ever recommend a prong collar.
They were a big fad about 10 years ago and the use of them has dwindled as people realize this.

However, I still get the occasional dog come in with a prong collar, and half the time its some docile 10+ year old dog and the idiot owners have this giant prong collar on the dog.

I used to use a nose halti (not metal) on my dog when training her. If she pulled it tight it just basically tightened around the nose and pulled her to the side stopping her from pulling!

Worked well, I'd never used a metal thing around her neck though, that's just mean

Wild pack animals display their dominance by asserting a level of force upon the insubordinate.

In some cases, grabbing/biting the insubordinate by the neck effectively choking them for small periods of time. In others, they just beat the crap out of them.

The idea of a choke chain being terrible and 'unnatural' is preposterous. While it can be used as a device for torture (which I don't mean to advocate), it can also be used as a valuable training tool to display owner dominance over the animal.

So yes. If properly used a choke chain is a valuable tool for pet owners.
