Cats are better for people who don't have a lot of time. They're busy with work or whatever and don't have a lot of time to spare keeping their pets company. Dogs are cuter (to me) but they are more high-maintenance. You have to walk them at least once in a while, especially if they're a larger breed. They also create bigger messes and are dirtier and smellier.

Personally I like dogs better.
