there are ways to make them do what your after without being mean
the main trick to training anything is finding the reward that can always be used as a treat.

lay down just the opposite place the food on the ground and prevent them from going to it unless they calm down and relax and do nothing. got to remember to have goal stepping stones and reward for them.
My buddies wife trained their cats
left paw and right paw shake that shit is crazy because most animals will get the paw shake down fast the right and left have to be
