Huskies are much more energetic in their younger years, and they are a lot of work. I have a husky / german shepherd mix that we got when he was two months, and he likes to dig up holes in the yard if left unattended, and he needs to go on two long walks each day to the dog park to let out his energy.

It's been said but I'd have to recommend a GSD. I've had 2 myself. Just amazing dogs!

But it looks like you have your mind set on the first 2 choices. Between the 2 I would choose a Husky or Malamute. Rotts are big and heavy dogs. Very prone to hip dysplasia.

You should really think about rescuing a dog...

Besides the fact that animals from local shelters are in desperate need of a loving home, if you get a mutt there's a lesser chance of health complications.

The most important thing though is that when you find the right dog you'll know. It sounds cliche I know, but you'll find a dog and you won't be able to leave without him/her.

Husky. Although I'm not sure how good they are with kids. I got mine when he was 3 and we think he may have been beaten by his previous owners. They can be stubborn dogs. And he tends to nip if he doesn't get his way (i.e. someone left food on the table and he goes for it and I intervene, he'll put your hand in his mouth and growl but won't do a thing other than that). Nothing bad but sometimes it can scare other people. Not sure if he's a good representation of the breed because he's so freakin weird. Doesn't really care about running. Will lounge around all day. Lays on top of you and submits very easily. I was expecting a much more energetic, time consuming dog. I think if you got one as a pup it wouldn't be difficult to train or a problem around kids at all. You'd just have to worry about his energy.
