My condolences, I know what it's like to put down your dog. I had to put down my 15 year old rotwiler/lab mix almost a year ago, been exactly 316 days and it's still fresh in my memory. He had an eye infection that wouldn't go away, calcium buildup on his spinal cord next to his tail which caused constant pain, he had severe arthritis, some lumps that might've been something serious, an ear hemotoma in his right ear after his left ear had one a few months prior, plus ear infections in both ear. Whatever was wrong with him was just doing a number all at once.
I still call his name when I call my other dog. Been thinking for a long time to find a replacement so my other dog isn't as lonely, he will bring my old dog's favorite toy sometimes and sit in my lap and just lay his head on me and look up. He does the same thing with my father's slippers since my father passed.
The pain won't go away, you'll scar and it'll scab over. Just remember the good times. Getting a new dog can help and it doesn't dishonor your dog in any way.
