won't need much else, they're great dogs :D

generally speaking, german bred GS' > american bred ones in terms of health

They got so overbred and hip displasia became so common in them that the german kennel club started requiring genetic testing for a predisposition for hip displasia. If the dog tested positive for it they couldn't be registered as a purebred GS. Being all white or black will also disqualify them lol.

American bred ones have no such requirements so it's gone prettymuch unchecked.

Growing up a buddy of mine had an american bred white GS and she was pretty healthy and lived to (I think) ~15 years old

i hope he is one of they healthy ones then he is a great tempered dog loving and playful but not hyper energetic :P
and i can go get him tested for hip dysplasia right? or is it something that happens with age?

tbh I'm not sure if the test is available here, so that's something you'd have to ask a vet (which if it's uncommon, you can bet it's gonna cost an arm and a leg)

it can develop earlier in some dogs, but it's primarily an older dog's condition

you can catch early signs of it on x-rays, and begin treatment early to minimize it's impact on his joints

there's suppliments (glucosomine and condroitin, not sure of those are spelled right) that will help maintain his joints should it start manifesting

there's also food out now (not sure but I think it's from purina) that has glucosomine and condroitin in it to supplement his prescription (example: if he requires 800mg of each and the dog food has 600mg in it, you only need a 200mg pill) it also had some other interesting stuff, like a coating that helps break down tooth tarter when they chew.

though right now you should have a few years of companionship before that's even a worry, but it never hurts to be prepared ^_^

e/ oh, and sometimes (rarely) it can also effect his back (stress from being a large breed)

don't give him the supplements unless your vet recommends it, not sure if it'll cause any deformations or anything but they do help regenerate the cartilage which is still growing when he's a pup

eh there's no definitive time by which it will develop, but I guess it could start to manifest that early if he's got an extreme predisposition for it

but lets be honest, if you've had him for 2 years and it starts to happen chances are you're going to be attached to him by then and won't want to give him up.
