I had both of my kittens chipped right after I got them - it's not so much of a help with cats because they are generally territorial, but since I live in a very urban area now, we decided to keep them as indoor cats - so getting them chipped was a good idea for if they ever escape.

The microchip that has their information and can be scanned.

I saw on Ripley's Believe it or Not
A dog owner finally found her dog after 7-9 years (forgot exact number) since the dog was chipped and was found and scanned.

Do you have any of your pets chipped?
If not, will you eventually? Or are you against it for any reason at all?

My puppy will be chipped in 3 months

4 year olds been chipped since 6 months old

we asked for it for cheap (got it like 20$ --> usually costs 40$) when we adopted our pets from humane society :)

I got my more expensive breeders chipped but that's about it... Pretty hard for one of my snakes to get out of it's locked cage out of a locked room from a usually locked house.

And for everyone saying it's inhumane... People get microdermal implants all the time. They cause no discomfort short of the recovery process which is in 99.9% of cases very short. For pets that have the possibility to escape, it's so much easier for animal control to scan a chip and drop him/her back off then hope you see the "dog found" ad, or happen to know that exact animal belongs to you...

while microchipping is the go now and i did have to get my dog microchipped because i took him overseas to a country with compulsory microchipping
in principle i do not like microchipping because the chip can wander through the body (doesn't happen often but it can)
but i am in favour of proper identification, a reliable and tested method is to have kennel identifier/sequence number tatooed inside the ear
(works well for pedigree dogs which are registered)
